    Researching Dappled Light
Among the particular challenges of the project has been the unpredictability of the subject, responding to time, location, weather and seasonality. Consulting weather maps and dapple-chasing drives have become part of the on-going working process. We searched for sites with leafy canopy, finding that the edges of woodlands and hillsides provided welcoming places for both videoing and dancing. A twisting yew tree offered us winter dapples. We sought eclipsed dapples and looked for dappled moonlight. Further afield, we collected dappled experiences while abroad. Returning home, we found dappling infusing the everyday, permeating through windows onto kitchen and bedroom walls, spangling the garden walls of our working studio. Each installation for The Dappled Light Project is designed specifically for the location of the performances. At Wenning Studios we deliberately merged associations of landscape and dwelling, to play with the poetics of habitat. Preparing the space for these performances, we explored the recesses and undersides of the work-space, dancing and projecting into unexpected corners and hidden cupboards, dappling across multiple surfaces to illuminate the secrets of un-seen spaces. For us, dapped light offers a metaphor for liminal, in-between states that are kept alive by the indeterminate nature of this light play. As we allow an instability of knowing through fragile, momentary empathies, our movement with and within the light offers us a threshold into interiority and engagements with wonder, which re-orientate our understanding of enchantment.

    Videoing Processes
In a dappled place, I search for viewing points. Dwelling in the visual world of the view finder, blinkered by focus, my body feels for places from which to support an image. I climb into branches, crawl through woodland roots, press between the walls of a dappled ginnel. I drag the camera along my leg to track, brace the camera against my nose to pan, feel knees drop with the dips and slides of appearing light. The light moves, the light moves me, my body becomes videoing process. Michelle moves, my breath responds. A breeze swells through my arm, the light changes, a smile spreads through my back. I hone closer to the pulsing of the light, pull towards the nuances of Michelle dancing. The camera etches my sensations into the image, layering breath into the worlds within worlds of the image moved and moving. And also: opportunistic, altert for the fortuitious moment And too: patient, waiting for the magic to appear The dapples that Michelle and I see elude the camera's focus, disappear in exposure. Adjust, shift, re-frame. Push the exposure and allow the camera to create its own dapples, Not all apparent images are of fortuitious moments found,; the most magical dapples are camera-made, the resonances of the camera breathing into the light.

    Choreographic Responses
I stand still, mesmerised by this tremoulous light shadow, my body attuned solely to absorbing its shimmering instant; the moment is of dappledness. My choreographic responses remember these encounters, but it is the sensitive capturings made by my fellow dappled light chaser June, that facilitate me an extended contemplation of the experience. June's filming of dappled light has revealed rhythmical and spatial possibilities to support a choreographic score as I play with embodying the quality of the edges of dappled light. Danced movements diffuse my contours, that which contains me; the muscularity of flesh dissolves to flow with the skin of dappled light, this in-between light. Moving from the deeper folds of my internal landscape, my thinking pours into the spherical possibilities that the moment of movement offers; the flow of this dance purling in the encounter with dappled light. As I exhale, spread my skin, wishing to be an open surface to receive dappled light before the instance dissolves. These are solitary moments wrapped in phantasmagorical-light-imprints of the sun.
